Rainbow Theme: Part 1

This week our toddler learning theme is Rainbows. We've done a few things today, but come back tomorrow and see many more of our adventures in learning.

I use our garage (where we also hold school) walls as a gallery of Zhana's artwork. To go with the artwork she is busy creating in the theme of artwork, I made a wall quote using clear contact paper that says, “The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you do the work.” It doesn't look great, but it is a garage afterall and serves its purpose.

Zhana and I made a Rainbow theme book. She did a some of the coloring but I did most of the work on this project. In addition to just rainbow, I incorporated the Noah Arc theme. It's technically not a lapbook as it is too small and just some cardstock folded and laminated, however, I used other Rainbow themed lapbooks online as a guide.

On the inside a made a color mixing chart showing the primary colors and which colors are mixed together to make other colors. See this link, for an example: http://www.firsschool.ws/t/colorarc.htm
Also on the inside, I made a little pocket for Noah's Arc Sequence cards. The cards are very simple and hopefully after being told the story several times, Zhana will be able to put the events in order. I found these on a lapbook site but unfortunately, can't find the link to them now. If you really want them, let me know and I'll do a little searching for them.
On the back, I have a very simple explanation of how Rainbows are viewed around the world and some the different myths. Also, there I have another pocket with a little accordian style book about colors.
Next, we made a rainbow xylophone based on this video: http://www.expertvillage.com/video/9838_kids-music-xylophone.htm
I didn't have any food coloring except for green, so I used a little jello left over for the rainbow jello we are working on to be posted tomorrow.
We've been spending time playing with her toys that are rainbow colored to enforce the concept such as these: Also, I made her a rainbow sorting chart that I downloaded from http://www.makinglearningfun.com/t.asp?b=m&t=http://www.makinglearningfun.com/Activities/StPatricksDay/StMMrainbowPotofGold.gif..
Well, I'm off to vote so I can't post anymore right now but check back tomorrow for more rainbow themed learning and activities.

I have just come across from your comment you left on the blog titled: teaching tiny tots at mommy school.

I have read your most recent posts and can't wait to go back through all of your blog ( need my two babies to be sleeping!)

I have a two year old girl and a four month old boy. I have learnt about so many good websites from your blog and love the ideas you do with your little girl.

On my blog, I have a list of toddler triumphs, which are a list of the most successful/creative thing we did in a particular week.

I can't wait to pop back and learn more. Thank you for sharing your brilliant ideas.
